Ed is a shareholder at Smith Alling, P.S. He focuses on business litigation in addition to advising businesses with regard to management decisions and alternative approaches to the resolution of legal matters. Having served six years as a member of the Tacoma City Council and one year as President of the Puget Sound Council of Governments (today the Puget Sound Regional Council), Ed is uniquely able to assist clients who want access to elected officials and department staff, or guidance in working with modern land use policy.
In addition to elected office, Ed has served as a member of the Washington State China Relations Council, member and President of the Washington State Arts Commission, and chairman of the International Section of the Washington State Bar Association. He is licensed to practice law in Washington and before the federal U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
Prior to beginning the practice of law, Ed served a tour in Viet Nam with the United States Army. Ed grew up in Tacoma and his wife, Dorothy, is a former teacher and volunteers at the Point Defiance Zoo. They have two daughters, Hilary, nearing graduation for her second masters, this one for making films with a documentary focus on scientific work, and Heather, working on a masters degree in the field of Education Management. Away from work and family, Ed enjoys serving on the Board of Directors for the Tacoma Actors’ Guild and, when time permits, he is mountain climbing, skiing and reading.
Having successfully obtained dismissal of a three year long complex business litigation claim, and with the office having many younger attorneys able to handle such litigation, Ed and Dorothy are traveling more. Last fall they were in East Africa, with Ed climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, and then six months later traveling throughout India.
Savoring more time in their condominium on the eastern slope of the North Cascades in the Methow Valley, Ed is transitioning his practice towards an emphasis on business counsel and case management. He is available on a wide range of matters, to include business governance and decision making; growth strategies; ownership transitioning; hiring and firing of personnel; as well as trademarks and litigation strategies.
