Ed is a founding member of Smith Alling. He focuses on business litigation and advising businesses with regard to management decisions and alternative approaches to the resolution of legal matters. Having served six years on the Tacoma City Council and one year as President of the Puget Sound Council of Governments (today the Puget Sound Regional Council), Ed is uniquely able to assist clients who want access to elected officials and department staff, or guidance in working with modern land use policy.
In addition to elected office, Ed has served as a member of the Washington State China Relations Council, member and President of the Washington State Arts Commission, and chairman of the International Section of the Washington State Bar Association. He is licensed to practice law in Washington and before the federal U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
Prior to beginning the practice of law, Ed served a tour in Vietnam with the United States Army. Ed grew up in Tacoma. His wife, Dorothy, is a former teacher and volunteers at the Point Defiance Zoo. Away from work and family, Ed enjoys mountain climbing, skiing and reading.
